2016 Oscar Nominations Reactions

MerylFlorence

The nominations for the 89th Annual Academy Awards have landed, and La La Land danced away with 14 nominations - tying the record for the most nominated film in Oscar history with All About Eve (1950) and Titanic (1997). Not so close behind were Arrival and Moonlight, with eight nominations each. Though there may not have been as many shocking snubs or surprises as in year's past, Oscar still had some curveballs to throw (No Amy Adams?! Hey, Michael Shannon! Mel Gibson - really?).

Have a listen to our initial thoughts on this morning's announcement below, and don't forget to subscribe to our CineDrunk podcast on iTunes. Read on for a list of the nominations and predictions results.

I correctly predicted 101/122 of this year's nominees (about 82%), which was good enough for a 4th place finish out of 5,463 participants at GoldDerby. I'll take it!

BEST PICTURE
Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

My Predictions: 9/9.
Missed the Cut: Arguably none. Jackie received the most nominations (3) without a Best Picture mention.
Analysis: A field of nine nominees (as there were 2011-2013) meant there were no exclusions from the widely expected top nine. La La Land remains way ahead of the pack and will waltz away with this award easily.

BEST DIRECTOR
Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge)
Barry Jenkins (Moonlight)
Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea)
Denis Villeneuve (Arrival)

My Predictions: 4/5. After missing with the more populist Directors' Guild, I thought Gibson was toast (though I had him listed 11th).
Missed the Cut: DGA nominee Garth Davis (Lion), David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water), Martin Scorsese (Silence)
Analysis: When Damien Chazelle wins (and that seems highly probable), he will become Oscar's youngest Best Director winner.

BEST ACTOR
Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)
Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge)
Ryan Gosling (La La Land)
Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic)
Denzel Washington (Fences)

My Predictions: 5/5.
Miss the Cut: Joel Edgerton (Loving)
Analysis: The consensus five made the cut, and Casey Affleck remains out front to take home the statue. This race isn't sewn up just yet though - Denzel Washington will pose a serious threat.

BEST ACTRESS
Isabelle Huppert (Elle)
Ruth Negga (Loving)
Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Emma Stone (La La Land)
Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)

My Predictions: 4/5.
Missed the Cut: Amy Adams (Arrival) was the highest profile miss of the morning, especially considering the eight total nominations her film received. Also, Annette Bening (20th Century Women). :-(
Analysis: The most competitive of the acting categories meant many talented and worthy women were bound to miss out, but no matter the competition, Meryl Streep collected her record-extending twentieth nomination. Emma Stone, especially as the only actor in this field from a Best Picture nominee, is the clear frontrunner.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water)
Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea)
Dev Patel (Lion)
Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)

My Predictions: 4/5. I had Michael Shannon at #7.
Missed the Cut: Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals)
Analysis: Mahershala Ali is leading the pack for the win, but watch out for Jeff Bridges.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Viola Davis (Fences)
Naomie Harris (Moonlight)
Nicole Kidman (Lion)
Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures)
Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)

My Predictions: 5/5.
Missed the Cut: This category solidified pretty rigidly with these five, though Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures) and Greta Gerwig (20th Century Women) stood a fighting chance.
Analysis: Viola Davis becomes the most nominated black actress in Oscar history with her third nomination here, and she is just about guaranteed to win for her powerful Fences performance.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Hell or High Water
La La Land
The Lobster
Manchester by the Sea

20th Century Women

My Predictions: 4/5.
Missed the Cut: Captain Fantastic, Zootopia
Analysis: Manchester by the Sea seems to have the edge, though a La La Land sweep is entirely possible, as it could eek out a victory in this category.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Arrival
Fences
Hidden Figures
Lion
Moonlight

My Predictions: 5/5.
Missed the Cut: Nocturnal Animals, Loving, Hacksaw Ridge
Analysis: Moonlight holds the edge here.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Kubo & the Two Strings
Moana
My Life as a Zucchini
The Red Turtle
Zootopia

My Predictions: 5/5.
Missed the Cut: Finding Dory (marking a rare, though not unexpected, miss for Pixar)
Analysis: Zootopia has this all sewn up.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Land of Mine (Denmark)
A Man Called Ove (Sweden)
The Salesman (Iran)
Tanna (Australia)
Toni Erdmann (Germany)

My Predictions: 5/5.
Missed the Cut: Paradise (Russia)
Analysis: I have yet to catch up with any of these nominees, but German comedy Toni Erdmann is likely the eventual winner.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Fire at Sea
I Am Not Your Negro
Life, Animated
O.J.: Made in America
13th

My Predictions: 5/5.
Missed the Cut: Cameraperson, Weiner, Tower
Analysis: O.J.: Made in America overcame the objections of some that it is a television miniseries and not a feature film to reach this nomination, taking it one step closer to a probable win here (which would make it the longest film in history to win an Academy Award).

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Arrival
La La Land
Lion
Moonlight
Silence

My Predictions: 5/5.
Missed the Cut: Nocturnal Animals, Hail, Caesar!, Jackie
Analysis: Though it wouldn't be my choice from this stellar lineup, La La Land is poised to win in most of its categories, including this one.

BEST FILM EDITING
Arrival
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
La La Land
Moonlight

My Predictions: 5/5.
Missed the Cut: Manchester by the Sea
Analysis: You can go ahead and add another statue to the La La Land pile.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Arrival
Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them
Hail, Caesar!
La La Land
Passengers

My Predictions: 3/5.
Missed the Cut: Jackie, Silence, The Handmaiden
Analysis: At last a category where it looks as though La La Land will face some serious competition. I'd say Fantastic Beasts is the frontrunner here, but I'm not at all confident in that declaration.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Allied
Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them
Florence Foster Jenkins
Jackie
La La Land

My Predictions: 4/5.
Missed the Cut: The Dressmaker, Hail, Caesar!, Hidden Figures
Analysis: I guess La La Land is ahead here because voters will check just about every box next to the words "La" and "Land," but this is not an award it should be winning. Right? Hard to tell which other nominee would be in pole position at this stage though.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Jackie
La La Land
Lion
Moonlight
Passengers

My Predictions: 3/5.
Missed the Cut: The BFG (meaning 50-time nominee John Williams wasn't nominated in a year in which he was eligible - a rarity), Florence Foster Jenkins, Nocturnal Animals
Analysis: A pleasant surprise to see five first-time nominees in this category - Lion has two credited composers, while Passengers was scored by 14-time nominee Thomas Newman (who has yet to win). La La Land has this in the bag.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
"Audition (The Fools Who Dream)" (La La Land)
"Can't Stop the Feeling" (Trolls)
"City of Stars" (La La Land)
"The Empty Chair" (Jim: The James Foley Story)
"How Far I'll Go" (Moana)

My Predictions: 3/5.
Missed the Cut: Lots, but most egregiously "Drive It Like You Stole It" (Sing Street).
Analysis: Justin Timberlake and Lin-Manuel Miranda (who is just an Oscar away from EGOT) can now call themselves Oscar nominees. Though La La Land may split votes between its two nominated songs, "City of Stars" is still this category's most likely victor.

BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING
A Man Called Ove
Star Trek Beyond
Suicide Squad

My Predictions: 1/3. Oops.
Missed the Cut: Florence Foster Jenkins, Deadpool
Analysis: Kudos to this branch for continually nominating what they deem to be the best in their field no matter the film's overall quality. Star Trek Beyond seems the likeliest winner.

BEST SOUND MIXING
Arrival
Hacksaw Ridge
La La Land
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

My Predictions: 4/5.
Missed the Cut: Deepwater Horizon, Sully, Doctor Strange
Analysis: Even if it weren't the frontrunner in just about every race, musicals already tend to do well in this category, heavily favoring La La Land.

BEST SOUND EDITING
Arrival
Deepwater Horizon
Hacksaw Ridge
La La Land
Sully

My Predictions: 4/5.
Missed the Cut: Rogue One, 13 Hours, The Jungle Book
Analysis: This was the nomination that pushed La La Land to its record-tying total of 14 nominations, as its inclusion here is a bit strange (sound editing includes the sound effects created for a film - which is why big, action-filled films featuring bullets and explosions typically do well here). Barring a full La La Land sweep, this is more likely a place to reward Hacksaw Ridge or Arrival.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
Deepwater Horizon
Doctor Strange
The Jungle Book
Kubo & the Two Strings
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

My Predictions: 4/5.
Missed the Cut: Arrival, Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them
Analysis: Kubo becomes only the second animated film nominated in this category (after fellow stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas). The winner will surely be The Jungle Book.

In the short film categories: I managed 4/5 in Documentary Short and 3/5 in both Animated and Live Action Short.
