2017 Emmy Nominations Predictions

sarahpaulsonemmywin

Nominations for the 69th Annual Emmy Awards, honoring the best of the best in television from the past year, will be announced tomorrow, July 13th. With HBO's juggernaut Game of Thrones ineligible (it didn't air new episodes within the June-May window) and a number of much-buzzed first year series looking likely to break through, there may be a healthy amount of surprises among the nominees. Though this is the Emmys, so maybe not. I'll be cheering loudly for The Leftovers and Westworld on the Drama side, all things Big Little Lies in the Limited Series categories, and Carrie Coon times two. Below are my last-minute predictions in 16 of the top categories.

DRAMA

BEST DRAMA SERIES

The Crown (Netflix)
This Is Us (NBC)
Better Call Saul (AMC)
The Americans (FX)
Stranger Things (Netflix)
Westworld (HBO)
The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu)

Alternates: House of Cards (Netflix), The Leftovers (HBO), Homeland (Showtime), Orange is the New Black (Netflix)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: The Leftovers (HBO)

Two-time reigning champ Game of Thrones and the late Downton Abbey are out of the running, but there are no less than FIVE brand new shows hoping to take their place. Better Call Saul seems certain to repeat, and all my fingers are crossed that the major nominations The Americans received last year were not a fluke (despite a fairly lackluster season, it remains one of TV's best). I'm betting all five freshmen series make the cut, which would leave perennial nominees like House of Cards and Homeland on the outside looking in.

BEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul)
Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us)
Matthew Rhys (The Americans)
Kevin Spacey (House of Cards)
Rami Malek (Mr. Robot)
Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan)

Alternates: Anthony Hopkins (Westworld), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Justin Theroux (The Leftovers), Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: Justin Theroux (The Leftovers)

BEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Claire Foy (The Crown)
Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale)
Keri Russell (The Americans)
Robin Wright (House of Cards)
Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder)
Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld)

Alternates: Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), Claire Danes (Homeland), Christine Baranski (The Good Fight), Mandy Moore (This Is Us)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: Carrie Coon (The Leftovers)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

John Lithgow (The Crown)
Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul)
Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us)
Jeffrey Wright (Westworld)
Ed Harris (Westworld)
Jared Harris (The Crown)

Alternates: Michael McKean (Better Call Saul), Jon Voight (Ray Donovan), Michael Kelly (House of Cards), David Harbour (Stranger Things)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: Christopher Eccleston (The Leftovers)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Thandie Newton (Westworld)
Chrissy Metz (This Is Us)
Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things)
Winona Ryder (Stranger Things)
Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel)
Vanessa Kirby (The Crown)

Alternates: Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black), Ann Dowd (The Handmaid's Tale), Maura Tierney (The Affair), Margo Martindale (The Americans)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: Amy Brenneman (The Leftovers)

COMEDY

BEST COMEDY SERIES

Veep (HBO)
black-ish (ABC)
Silicon Valley (HBO)
Atlanta (FX)
Transparent (Amazon)
Master of None (Netflix)
Modern Family (ABC)

Alternates: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix), Girls (HBO), Insecure (HBO), Better Things (FX)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: Girls (HBO)

Unlike Drama Series, all seven of last year's nominees are again eligible here. The lone new series that stands a chance at breaking in looks to be FX's Atlanta. I'm predicting it pushes out Netflix's quirky Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but it's possible that five-time winner Modern Family gets snubbed after seven consecutive nominations.

BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent)
Donald Glover (Atlanta)
Anthony Anderson (black-ish)
Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley)
Aziz Ansari (Master of None)
William H. Macy (Shameless)

Alternates: Ted Danson (The Good Place), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Hank Azaria (Brockmire)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: Rob Delaney (Catastrophe)

BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep)
Tracee Ellis Ross (black-ish)
Lily Tomlin (Grace & Frankie)
Allison Janney (Mom)
Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)
Jane Fonda (Grace & Frankie)

Alternates: Issa Rae (Insecure), Lena Dunham (Girls), Sarah Jessica Parker (Divorce), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: Lena Dunham (Girls)
