2018 Emmy Nominations Predictions
/Nominations for the 70th Annual Emmy Awards, honoring the best of the best in television from the past year, are set to be unveiled the morning of July 12. HBO's juggernaut Game of Thrones took a year off from last year's awards (after not airing its seventh season in time for consideration), so it's hoping to roar back into contention this time, while reigning Best Comedy champ Veep will be the one to step aside as we wait for its final season. 2018 will be voters' last chance to award some unrewarded shows and performers like FX's The Americans (my fave) and The Crown's Claire Foy, but it will also be their first chance to award potential new favorites like BBC America's Killing Eve or Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. One never really knows which direction Emmy voters will swerve in - hell, this year they even have the option to dip back into old favorites thought once finished (hey, Will & Grace!) or long dormant (Curb Your Enthusiasm) - but read on for my last-minute, foolhardy predictions of which way they'll go in 16 of the top categories.
DRAMA
BEST DRAMA SERIES
Game of Thrones (HBO)
The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu)
This Is Us (NBC)
The Crown (Netflix)
Westworld (HBO)
The Americans (FX)
Stranger Things (Netflix)
Alternates: Killing Eve (BBC America), Ozark (Netflix), Homeland (Showtime)
I'm Rooting For: The Americans (FX)
Last year saw five freshmen series enter this field, and I suspect all five will return (though I'd say Stranger Things or even Westworld are the shakiest of those five). The other two programs that rounded out this group last year did not air new episodes within the eligibility period (Better Call Saul and House of Cards), which, in theory, would open up two slots - but obviously one will be filled by two-time champ Game of Thrones. The last spot could go to a new series (Killing Eve seems to have the current momentum), but I'm guessing (and praying) that The Americans re-enters the lineup for its near perfect conclusion to one of TV's best shows ever.

COMEDY
BEST COMEDY SERIES
Atlanta (FX)
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)
black-ish (ABC)

Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
GLOW (Netflix)
Alternates: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix), Will & Grace (NBC), Modern Family (ABC), The Good Place (NBC)
Underdog I'm Rooting For: High Maintenance (HBO)
With Veep out of the way and enthusiasm fading for previous nominees Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Modern Family (which has been nominated for each of its first eight seasons), there's room for some major shake-ups in this category. Maisel seems like the strongest of the new comedies, but I suspect there's also room for both Barry and GLOW alongside perennial nominees like Silicon Valley, black-ish, or Curb Your Enthusiasm. The biggest question mark for me will be to see just how much voters embrace the rebooted Will & Grace - a former winner here in 2000.
